Route Info

  • Starting from The Lion’s Den at the Old Zoo next to UCT, the 47km route kicks off with a gentle uphill warm up, past Rhodes Memorial.
  • The trail flows onto Devils Peak’s jeep tracks and includes 2 tough climbs within the first 5 km.
  • Once across Tafelberg Road, the lower contour path is used to reach the King’s Blockhouse, with a gnarly scramble up the ridge line.
  • The upper contour path presents many iconic and breathtaking views of the city and mountains, BUT don’t relax yet – a cut-off awaits slow runners at Kloof Nek.
  • From the Nek, the Pipe track is comparatively easy, but has a sting in the tail at Corridor Ravine: a tough ascent up the 12 Apostles.
  • On top, the upper mountain trails meander through the Valley of the Red Gods, and onwards, via the front face trail, to the Summit at Maclear’s Beacon.
  • From this high point it is downhill, past the dams and descending the treacherous Nursery Ravine.
  • Into Newlands forest, the route joins the 22km trail at Woodcutters path and enjoys kilometers of beautiful forest and streams, until finishers find themselves back at the Old Zoo.
